The Psychology of LeBron James’ Arrival to the Sixers

On July 24, 2026, NBA superstar LeBron James shocked the world when he announced that he signed a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. While fans focused on the impact LeBron could have on the NBA season, the public reaction also revealed what sports fans rely on when anticipating future events: luck and defense mechanisms. ​After the 2025-2026 NBA season, it became evident that LeBron James was seeking new opportunities to win a final championship ring. As he departed from the Los Angeles Lakers team, many fans began to determine which options reigned supreme for LeBron. 

​Many teams seemed like a heavy favorite to be chosen as LeBron’s swan song–for instance, the Golden State Warriors to team up with Stephen Curry or the Cleveland Cavaliers to return to LeBron’s hometown. However, some fans of different teams began to believe in the “impossible”: LeBron joining their team. Yet, for many teams, there was a lack of evidence and reasoning to support this belief. 

NBA fans perceive the opportunity to have a four-time NBA champion on their team as “lucky”. Though fans cannot control which team LeBron James chooses, they hold the belief and desire to pursue this longing. Belief in good luck allows individuals to view situations in their favor, even when they have little control. This creates a positive illusion and feelings of confidence, control, and optimism (Day & Maltby, 2005). 

Some fans were less likely to have a chance to get LeBron James onto their team because LeBron was actively seeking an immediate opportunity to win a championship. However, fans on social media still created content about the possibility of signing LeBron to their team, showcasing confidence and optimism. 

Among people who are not fans of the Sixers, most reacted with disappointment. Personally, as a Golden State Warriors fan, I crumpled up a Post-it note that wrote “I hope AD (Anthony Davis) and LeBron go to the Warriors.” Other reactions were: stating that one already expected this outcome, believing that their team was better without LeBron, believing that the Sixers will not win, and more. These reactions connect back to the psychological concept of defense mechanisms. Defense mechanisms are unconscious strategies that people use to protect themselves from anxiety-provoking thoughts or feelings (Drevitch, 2026). Because fans have to confront internal challenges, they react with defense mechanisms. Connecting back to my reaction, I exemplified repression, which is the action of blocking out difficult thoughts into one’s subconscious as I eliminated this information in my vicinity.

After LeBron declared his signing to the Sixers, the fans of the Philadelphia 76ers were empowered by the signing of LeBron. For context, the Sixers previously processed a trade to send Paul George to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Jaylen Brown–a player who won an NBA championship and the Finals MVP award. With two highly skilled and athletic players, fans embraced the likelihood of winning a championship. This exemplifies how individuals perceive the future differently, as they can mentally simulate scenarios in which they win regular-season games. Though the season has not started yet, the future seems possible with LeBron James on the Sixers’ side.
