Psych: Decoding the Mind of Shawn Spencer

Psych is a show that brings a smile to my face every time I think about it. I first watched the show with my Dad and siblings, and we all loved it so much that it soon became our go-to show to watch as a family. This love ran so deep that the two main leads even became members of the family in a way, as my Dad would later name our dogs Spencer (after the lead protagonist, Shawn Spencer) and Gus (after the protagonist, Burton Guster). What makes the show so great, in my opinion, is the twist it puts on a traditional Sherlock Holmes detective narrative and most crime shows. Shawn isn’t the broody and jaded detective; he’s not even a real detective at all, but instead he’s a carefree, comedic “psychic”. While the show is full of fun mysteries and hijinks, one thing is for certain: Shawn Spencer’s talent is not paranormal, as he’d like the public to believe, but rather a rare cognitive ability. 

Shawn Spencer has what many people refer to as “photographic memory”, where he can recall moments in shocking vivid detail, almost like he took a mental snapshot. While this might seem like a work of complete fiction, there is a real connection to this trope, known as eidetic memory. “Eidetic memory, that being the capability to remember in near-perfect detail a piece of information (or otherwise defined as a memory which is very vivid and has great potential for recall), is extremely rare.” (Berry et al., 2023). This phenomenon occurs in only 2 to 15% of the population, mostly in children, and disappears by age 12. The disappearance of this talent in early adolescence may be linked with children relying less on visual memory as they get older and thinking more abstractly. Additionally, the older we get, the more likely we are to focus our attention and knowledge on specific things rather than everything around us, basically filtering out what is/isn’t useful. While many geniuses may claim to have an eidetic memory, they are more likely just to have good memorization and recall. 

What about Shawn Spencer? The show takes place almost entirely during his adult life, with little flashbacks to his childhood at the start of each episode, but he still has eidetic memory beyond adolescence.  Well, it’s exactly these flashbacks that allow us to understand why Shawn still has this rare ability. Shawn's dad, Henry Spencer, is a former police sergeant who has, since Shawn's childhood, been pushing him to follow in his footsteps and join law enforcement. In flashbacks, we see Henry teaching Shawn to use his eidetic memory, most often by having him close his eyes and recall a variety of details. One of the first examples of this is when the pair is getting ready to order dinner, and Henry prompts Shawn to recall how many hats are in the room, as well as their styles and colors. He pushes Shawn to tap into this talent and quickly analyze every room he sets foot in. This will serve Shawn well later on and is precisely why he can take on the role of a psychic and solve mysteries. The combination of his eidetic memory and basic training in traditional detective tactics allows Shawn to quickly pull the pieces together in unique ways. This ability to notice minor details others miss allows him to back up his theatrical fits with facts. 

Shawn’s abilities and skills aren’t solely due to his father's teachings, as the show later reveals that his mother, Madaline, also possesses an incredible memory. Dr. Madaline Spencer is a psychologist reported to have eidetic tonal memory, allowing her to perfectly recall conversations. While this differs from Shawn's ability, the connection and awe remain. 

But the scientific question remains: Is it possible for Shawn Spencer to truly retain his eidetic memory into adulthood? Well, unfortunately for us, the science still cannot fully support or rule it out. However, it’s important to note that while the human brain is pretty magical, a more likely explanation for eidetic memory in adulthood is that it’s a combination of experience in a certain field and wonderful memory. Although, due to a lack of research, who’s to say that with the training/reinforcing of Shawn's memory as a child, it couldn’t be possible?
